Description

The International Alliance of App-based Transport Workers (IAATW) is a global federation of driver and courier organizations. It was established in January 2020 by representatives from sixteen countries with the goal of advancing the rights and improving the working conditions of app-based transport workers worldwide.

The IAATW functions as a network for trade unions and other grassroots organizations that represent individuals working for ride-sharing and delivery platforms such as Uber, Lyft, Didi, and Glovo. The alliance aims to coordinate efforts across different countries to address issues common to gig economy workers, including pay, job security, and safety.

Key objectives of the IAATW include:

  • Developing global campaigns to engage with multinational platform companies.
  • Building the capacity of local organizations to form strong unions and associations.
  • Fostering solidarity and knowledge sharing among its affiliated members to address both local and global industry challenges.

The alliance advocates for universal labor guarantees, fair wages, and transparency in algorithmic decision-making. One of its first major actions was a campaign to support Uber drivers in accessing their personal data. The IAATW has also been involved in legal actions, such as a case in the United Kingdom where judges ruled that Uber drivers should be classified as workers.

The organization has published reports on the working conditions of app-based transport workers and has called for regulatory action to address issues such as low earnings and unfair deactivations. The IAATW has a diverse membership with affiliates from countries across Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and North and South America.
