Description

In January 2021, the Barcelona Court ruled that Deliveroo riders are to be considered employees rather than independent contractors. It decided that 741 riders had to be registered as employees while Deliveroo received a fine of €1,3 million for unpaid social security contributions. In Spain, this marked the largest court case against delivery service platforms as of 2021. In 2019, the Madrid Court had decided that Deliveroo riders were to be classified as employees, which affected about 500 workers.
