The SNCF railway group plans to cut 2,081 jobs in 2018. The management announced this figure to its central works council in the framework of its 2018 draft budget. According to the annual budget, 2,046 job cuts are planned for the SNCF Mobilités branch, which covers passengers transport activities (– 2.5% of the workforce), and 35 job cuts are planned in the holding company (– 0.4% of the workforce). The workforce of the SNCF Réseau branch (construction and maintenance of tracks) must remain stable.

The job reductions will be implemented via natural attrition, mainly retirements. Over the same period, the group expects more than 5,000 recruitments, especially for customer contact and infrastructure. However, these recruitments do not compensate departures, which result in a net decrease of 2,081 jobs in 2018.

The draft budget 2017 announced about 1,200 job cuts in the Mobilités branch,  at the end of  2017 nearly 2,100 jobs were cut. At the central works council, the four representative unions voted against the 2018 budget. The measure is part of SNCF’s continuing restructuring programme that is to increase its competitiveness and to free up resources for investments in the infrastructure and security. Previous reports announced several rounds of job expansions (2011-1, 2011-2) and job cuts (2010, 2014, 2016).
