Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
RDB, an historical manufacturer of prefabricated buildings, is to dismiss about 300 workers at its plants in Belfiore (Verona), Bellona (Caserta), Monticelli d’Ongina (Piacenza), Tortoreto (Teramo) and the Pontenure headquarters (Piacenza).
Following a long period of crisis, entailing a gradual reduction of the workforce (see also RDBIT-2011), the company has been declared bankrupt last February by the Tribunal of Piacenza. Meetings aimed at selling the company continued and eventually came to an end in August 2015 with the acquisition by competitor Italprefabbricati.
The investor also reached an agreement with unions. As per agreement, about 70 RDB workers currently under short-time working scheme will be hired over the next weeks. The remaining 300 workers will be dismissed but Italprefabbricati assured that a significant share thereof (about 200) should be hired over the next 24 months.
