Description

On 24 October 2016, US-based tyre manufacturer Goodyear Dunlop Tires Germany announced to close their tire manufacturing plant at Philippsburg. The closure will start in the first quarter of 2017 and finished end of 2017.

At the moment 890 people are working at the site in Philippsburg. The company expects that all the 890 employees will be affected but negotiations with the Mining, Chemicals and Energy Industrial Union (IG BCE) have yet to start. The union as well as the mayor of Philippsburg already announced to protest against the closure. The company seeks to find socially acceptable solutions and support for their employees.

Goodyear Dunlop Tires Germany explained the closure with a strategic reorientation towards the production of premium tires. Goodyear produces at six sites with a total of 7,600 employees in Germany.  The company already cut 116 jobs in 2015 (Goodyear Dunlop, 2015).
