Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Swiss manufacturer of underwear Triumph announced the closure of its last production site in Oberwart, Burgenland, by the end of July 2015. The close will result in the loss of 210 positons. The company referred to declining market shares, growing production costs and a difficult global economic situation as reasons for the closure. The closure forms part of the company's strategy of optimising its supply chain. Job cuts will also affect production sites in Wiener Neustadt, Lower Austria, and two sites in Hungary.
Together with trade unions and the local works council a social plan will be developed for the affected employees. A representative of the local works council also urged officials to support the predominantly female staff, with an average age of 47, as it will be particulary difficult for them to find new jobs in the region. The city and the federal government of Burgenland have assured finacial support with the latter contributing €200,000 to a work foundation.
Triumph International with its 49 subsidies and 33,000 employees worldwide has been producing lingerie in Austria for more than 50 years. It has been one of the most important employers in the region of Burgenland. However, since the 1990ies several production sites have been shut down in Burgenland, Styria and Lower Austria (see also AT-23961).
