Michelin, the world's largest manufacturer of tyres, is to cut 436 staff at its plant in Joue-les-Tours (Indre et Loire). This is mainly due to the cessation of the production of truck tyres at the site by the end of 2014 or early 2015.

Cuts will be made effective via an early retirement scheme for staff aged 55 years or older. Additionally, 270 employees in Joue-les-Tours will be relocated within the group or given long-term training. Most relocated staff will find employment in La Roche-sur-Yon (Vendee), where the relocation of the tyres production will create about 170 jobs.

First early retirements could be implemented from July 2014 on. The largest part of the dismissals is to take effect from Setember 2014 on.

The decision follows a three months lasting negotiation process with labour unions. One union refused to sign the final contract, denouncing the restructuring plan.

Previous restructurings included large job expansions (FR2013, FR2011, FR2010) but also large job cuts (FR2009).
