Description
Osram, a German-Austrian technology group specialising in lighting and sensor solutions, has announced a restructuring programme to cut approximately 2,000 jobs worldwide.
The job cuts are split almost equally, with roughly 1,000 positions being eliminated in Europe and another 1,000 in Asia. In Germany, the semiconductor business in Regensburg is particularly affected, as production for established products is being relocated to Asia to make room for high-tech, automated manufacturing. Additionally, the shrinking market for traditional halogen lamps has led to the complete closure of the Schwabmünchen site (270 jobs) [Osram 2025-DE ] (https://apps.eurofound.europa.eu/restructuring-events/detail/203601 ) by 2027 and significant reductions at the Herbrechtingen plant by 2029.
The company emphasises that the job cuts will be managed in a socially responsible manner. The measure is being implemented to optimise costs and strengthen long-term competitiveness, despite a significant improvement in the company's financial performance, including a reduction in net losses to €129 million.
Headquartered in Premstätten (Austria) and Munich (Germany), Osram currently employs around 19,000 people worldwide, including about 7,500 in Europe and 10,700 in Asia.. The company has its production sites in Germany, Austria, China, Malaysia, and the United States.
