Description

As announced on 25 September 2025, German automotive supplier Thyssenkrupp Automation Engineering is cutting 270 jobs by mid 2026. The company announced to closure of its site at Chemnitz/Hohenstein-Ernstthal (Saxony) due to low demand for its products.

The company is producing equipment for battery production and had lacked in large-volume orders for some time. Management explained that the demand was not high enough to keep the site going.

Only a week before the company's announcement, the German Metalworkers' Union (IG Metall) and employees had demonstrated against possible job cuts. The union urges the company to take social responsibility for its workers and calls for a change in industrial policy. Thyssenkrupp was an important employer in the economically weaker region.

The closure of the site in Chemnitz/Hohenstein-Ernstthal follows a number of other announcements to cut jobs in further Thyssenkrupp divisions all over Germany registered by the ERM events database, see Thyssenkrupp Polysius-2024-DE, Thyssenkrupp Automotive Body Solutions-2024-DE and Thyssenkrupp Schulte-2024-DE.
