The solar cell production manufacturer Meyer Burger Industries dismissed 331 people at its site in Bitterfeld-Wolfen (Saxony). The production was stopped and employees laid off at the beginning of September 2025. Dismissals became necessary after Swiss parent company Meyer Burger had filed for insolvency. The parent company stated that Meyer Burger was not able to compete with Chinese firms on the market and there was not sufficient government support in Germany to continue production.
Also affected by the Swiss parent company's insolvency is Meyer Burger Germany. Latter operates a site in Hohenstein-Ernstthal (Saxony), focusing on mechanical engineering and technology development. At the site 289 people were laid off (also recorded in the ERM database Meyer Burger Germany 2025 - DE).
The latest job cuts follow announcements form March 2024 when the module production site in Freiberg (Saxony) was closed, affecting 300 employees (Meyer Burger 2024 - DE).
