Description
Swiss solar manufacturer Meyer Burger has announced the closure of its Freiberg (Saxony) production site for solar modules, resulting in the loss of 500 jobs. The closure is due to losses, market distortions caused by strong competition from state-subsidised solar modules from China, and the lack of state subsidies from Germany.
The majority of the affected jobs are in production. Of the approximately 500 employees, around 400 have already been given notice and are to be made redundant by the end of April due to their short notice period, while talks are underway with the remaining 100 employees regarding a potential relocation. Following the company's announcement that it was considering closing the site, the IG Metall trade union called on the German government to decide on subsidies for the industry.
Meyer Burger has approximately 1,400 employees worldwide, with locations in Switzerland, Germany, Asia, and the USA.
