Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Commercial Court of Lyon has agreed the takeover of the cooperative company Scopelec and its subsidiary Setelen by the Circet group, resulting in the loss of 1,251 jobs out of a total of 2,300. With this takeover, Scopelec lost its cooperative status. The company is specialises in the installation of telecommunications networks for operators, equipment manufacturers, companies and local authorities. The Circet group has undertaken to keep 1,049 of the 2,300 jobs still in place. Another offer, which planned to save 1,500 jobs, was not accepted by the court.
Scopelec began experiencing difficulties due to the loss of its subcontracting agreement with the Orange telecommunications group in April 2022. The cooperative announced 800 job cuts at the time. This figure was reduced to 450 following the maintenance of certain activities granted by Orange (FR-Scopelec-2022a). A business expansion was recorded in the ERM database in 2016, with 300 job creations (FR-Scopelec-2016).
