Description
The catering company Eurest, part of the British group Compass, is to lay off 146 workers in Portugal due to the closure of workplaces linked to the consequent decrease in requested meals due to the COVID-19 crisis. Redundancies mostly include catering workers but also a smaller part of the business area.
Unions pointed out that there are no other companies in the canteen sector with collective redundancy processes underway. Moreover, they added that 141 of the 146 involved employees are women.
Eurest, which has a turnover of over 100 million euros per year, has received and continues to receive support from the state during this pandemic period. However, In October of 2020, the company has already laid off 122 workers. The news follows 160 redundancies in Luxembourg in February 2021.
