Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Amcor Flexibles Finland, an affiliate of the global packaging company Amcor, announced the shutdown of its production plants in Eura and Lieksa, leading to the dismissal of 197 employees. A total of 127 people are affected at the Eura factory and 70 employees in Lieksa. The company plans to shut down the production plants by the end of June 2020 due to low profitability.
According to the management, the company has created a support program that aims to facilitate re-employment of the staff. A local trade union representative in Eura argues that it will be difficult for the workers of the Eura production plant to find jobs in their field.
The company’s production plant in Valkeakoski is not affected.
