Description

Philip Morris Tobacco, the cigarettes manufacturer, will close its plant in Berlin-Neukölln, by the end of 2019, causing 950 redundancies. Around 80 positions will be kept. The management explains that the closure is motivated by a shift in consumer habits and a decline in cigarettes demand.

The closure was announced in May 2019, causing mobilisation of the trade unions and local government. The negotiations with the trade union NGG and workers' representatives on a social plan are still ongoing. However, they won't have an impact on the number of job cuts.
