Supermarket chain Tesco announced its plans to close five hypermarkets in Bydgoszcz, Warsaw, Zabierzów and Sosnowiec. According to the company, the decision was taken in light of changing internal structures. The collective dismissal is expected to affect up to a maximum of 2,117 employees, which include 1,996 ordinary and 121 managerial positions. The company plans to carry out these redundancies between 10 October 2019 and 31 January 2020. Conditions of the labour adjustment plan are to be negotiated with trade unions, and redundant employees will receive a severance payment.

Operating in Poland since 1992, the company has around 350 stores across the country and employs nearly 20,000 people. In 2019, the company already announced three other restructuring programmes: January (1,300 jobs cut), June (1,480 jobs cut) and August (2,154 jobs cut).
