Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Mondelez, a multinational producer of food products, has announced restructuring measures at their facility in Herentals, a factory that is specialized in the production of biscuits and cookies. Three production lines will be closed in order to make the facility more cost efficiƫnt. Two of the production lines will be outsourced to other companies, the other one distributed among other Mondelez factories. In total 200 jobs are at risk, however the company management stated it will be able to do so without direct dismissals. Additionally approximately 10 million Euro will be invested in the other production lines at the facility. The dismissals will be carried out in a phased manner over 2 years. Trade unions were surprised by the news and on the day of the announcement actions were held at the facility, including a temporary strike.
