European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
Allied Bakeries has announced plans to cut 180 jobs from its operations in Cardiff. The company employs 360 staff at the site, and 4,000 across the UK. It recently launched a review of its bread making operations following the loss of a contract with a major supermarket to supply own brand products. Bread production will continue at larger UK sites and the Cardiff premises will be used as a distribution centre for Wales and the South West of England.
A spokesperson for BFAWU trade union expressed disappointment at the decision and noted the likely knock-on effects in the local economy.The timetable for the redundancies has yet to be confirmed.

Following the period of consultation, the company confirmed the closure of the bakery in Cardiff. The decision has resulted in 176 employees being made redundant. In the recognition of the impact of this decision, the company plans to offer an enhanced redundancy package along with support to help find alternative employment either in the local community or at the company's other sites in the UK.
