Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The energy company SSE has announced plans to cut 444 jobs which it has blamed on tough trading conditions and the government's energy price cap. Reports also suggest that low take-up of new energy meters by customers is a significant factor in the company's decision. The job losses will come from the customer service and meter installer sections of the business and enhanced redundancy packages are apparently being offered.
The geographical location of the job losses is not known, but it would appear likely that the company's head office in Perth will be affected. The head office currently employs around 2,000 workers. The timeframe for the job cuts has not been announced.
