Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Ministry of Transport and the Croatian Motorways Authority are going to dismiss staff from the state-owned company (Hrvatske autoceste – HAC). The HAC's business restructuring programme was recommended by Deloitte's consultants. Deloitte suggests the abolition of up to 40 of the 90 existing management posts within the HAC. In addition, they found that 140 positions in the company's administration are unnecessary. Therefore, various independent departments will be abolished or merged, while their heads will be appointed to lower positions.
The mentioned 140 administrative staff will be dismissed by the end of 2019 with severance payments averaging a gross amount of HRK 0.16 million (€21,500) per person, which is a significant payment for Croatian circumstances. The HAC states that this rationalisation will reduce the annual cost of more than HRK 25.5 million (€3.42 million). The restructuring programme got the support from the President of the company trade union Cestarski sindikat.
