Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The management of the clothing company C&A has announced a reorganisation project that will result in the closure of 14 stores in France (out of a total of 160) and the loss of 115 to 121 jobs (depending on the media sources). The announcement has already been made at the stores. In Saint-Etienne, 14 employees should receive their dismissal letter by the end of April. In Poitiers, the number of dismissals is not known. 'Employees will be dismissed, except those who accept internal reclassifications in other C&As, subject to accepting mobility and the existence of open and unfilled positions,' observes a FO union delegate.
The group has already closed eight stores in France in 2018 and 13 in 2017. In addition to the competition from its rival H&M, C&A competes with the Kiabi chain's renewed concept; with the low prices of 15 Primark stores; and with online sales, which attract customers by offering fashionable items at lower prices. Present in 18 countries, C&A operates more than 1,900 stores worldwide.
