Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Sony has announced staff reductions of up to 200 in Lund, Sweden. The reductions concern staff in the company’s mobile phone-division. In addition to internal staff reductions, Sony is reducing the number of external consultants operating in Lund.
The staff reductions are a result of Sony’s globally falling sales of mobile phones. Cost-saving measures will be implemented in several countries housing the company's mobile phone production, with the aim to reduce overall costs by 50 percent over the coming two years. Sony expects to achieve these cost reductions mainly through layoffs and by integrating production processes.
According to Sony spokeperson, the number of layoffs can change during upcoming negotiations between employees and Sony. Negotiations are expected to be finished by the end of March 2019, after which the final number of staff reductions will be announced.
