Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences is to dismiss at least 110 employees in Vilnius by 30 November 2018. The main cause of the dismissals is the optimisation of the higher education network in Lithuania. The Lithuanian Parliament adopted the plan for consolidation of Lithuanian universities in June 2017. According to the plan, only four universities out of 14 are expected to remain in the country after the planned reform. On 13 January 2018, the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania took a decision to merge the Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences with the Vytautas Magnus University. At least 110 employees will be dismissed after the consolidation of the two universities to avoid the overlapping of the functions. Currently the Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences employs 635 employees.
