Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Whitbread, the UK-based hospitality business, has announced that it will cut a minimum of 250 management positions in its pub-restaurants as part of cost-cutting programme. The mandatory consultation period is already underway and the company has promised to support staff in finding alternative positions.
A spokesperson for the company said that the aim is to simplify management teams to bring their business structure “in line with industry norms” and added that the company expects to save £250 million (€281 million) as a result of the cuts.
Whitbread’s restaurants are branded as Beefeater and Brewers Fayre. The company also owns the Costa Coffee and the Premier Inn hotel chains.
