Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Mahle Powertrain, the UK subsidiary of Germany-based Mahle GmbH, closed its manufacturing site in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, England on 27th April, making 110 employees redundant. The company specialises in the design, development, manufacture, assembly and test of internal combustion engines and hybrid powertrain systems. Its engineering research centre and UK head office in Northampton are not affected by the job reductions.
The manager of the now closed factory said that the decision to close the plant was due to the uncertainties around diesel engines and more generally, around the automotive market. He added that “Brexit may have something to do with" the closure.
Mahle Powertrain had 458 employees in the UK and around 600 in in Germany, Brazil, USA, Japan and China. The wider Mahle Group has around 80,000 employees in 32 countries.
