Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The administrators of Countrywide Farmers, the UK-based farming and agricultural retail company, have announced that 208 employees have been made redundant. Staffs working at the company’s headquarters in Evesham, its logistics centre in Defford and 30 shops across England and Wales that have closed are affected.
The administrators stated that redundancies were unavoidable and “all affected staff have been informed and will be paid up to and including their last day of employment.”
When it went into administration in March 2018, Countrywide Farmers employed more than 700 people and had 48 stores. As 32 employees were made redundant in March, a total of 240 jobs have been lost at Countrywide Farmers.
