Description

Owners of Eggborough Power Station near Selby in North Yorkshire have confirmed that the site will close following the failure to secure new contracts. The closure of the coal fired power station will result in the loss of 170 jobs. The plant had been due to close by 2025 in any case, due to the government's policy of phasing out coal fired power stations. When Eggborough closes there will only be six such power stations remaining in England and Wales. The date for the closure is yet to be announced, though it is expected that it will begin following the end of its current contract in September 2018. Some jobs may remain in the short term to assist with the process of decommissioning.

The closure was previously announced in 2015, at the time 240 people worked at the plant.
