Bath and North Somerset Council has announced plans to cut 300 jobs from its total staff of 2,000 as it tries to save costs. Most jobs will be cut in the 2018-19 financial year, as the council attempts to reduce costs by GBP 16 million over the next two years.
In an email sent to council employees the company said that 'We face some very difficult decisions as we cannot avoid job losses'. The company's representative confirmed that the initial consultation with trade unions had already started. The representative of the council has said that the council aimed to achieve the job cuts primarily through voluntary redundancies, but he also anticipated compulsory redundancies.
Local authorities in the UK are currently preparing their budgets for the next financial year. Job cuts have also been announced by Swindon Borough Council.
