Description
Government Department, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), has announced plans to close 68 of its job centres. The move will result in the loss of 750 jobs. The DWP has said that some redeployment may be possible. There are also plans to open five new larger job centres, though the locations of the these sites have not been confirmed. The cuts are expected to take place over the forthcoming year.
The Government justified the plans by arguing that more and more of the business nowadays happens online and that the cuts will offer better value for taxpayers. The PCS union argued that the changes would mean that the most vulnerable members of society would struggle to access the services they need.
