Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Call center operator and IT service provided System House is to hire 311 workers in Rome and Casavatore (Naples).
The new personnel will be employed in call centre services to be provided on behalf of Poste Italiane.
Hirings will address 311 out of 340 operators dismissed in 2016 by the former contractor, Gepin Contact, when Poste Italiane decided to discontinue the assignment (see Gepin ContactIT-2016). As for the 29 left out, Poste Italiane guaranteed they will be hired back by another subcontractor.
Workers will have their working time halved from 40 to 20 hours per week and will not be recognised seniority wage increases gained over their previous work experience. They will receive about €600 as gross monthly wage, plus a performance related pay to be agreed with unions by September 2017.
These conditions have been underwritten with unions after a long phase of negotiations at the Ministry of Economic Development.
The largest Italian union, the General Confederation of Italian Work (CGIL) refused to sign the agreement. The union deemed the proposed wages and terms of employment not acceptable by operators employed for Poste Italiane over the last 15 years.
