Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Global pharmaceutical enterprise, Shire, has announced that it will relocate operations from Orth an der Donau (Lower Austria) to Ireland leading to the dismissal of up to 650 employees. According to reports, the company has registered 650 employees with the early warning system of the public employment service (AMS). In addition to layoffs in Orth an der Donau, restructuring may also affect staff in Vienna. Shire has not yet revealed the final figures, but confirmed that at least 500 employees - mostly highly qualified staff - will be affected by the restructuring measures. Management and trade unions have already agreed on a social plan. Overall, Shire currently employs 4,000 people in Vienna, Krems and Orth an der Donau.
