Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 26 May 2017, the US electronics company and IT distributor Ingram Micro Services announced to cut 80 out of 380 jobs at its site in Flensburg, Germany. A transfer of the affected employees into a transfer agency is planned for the end of June 2017. The agency will offer further qualification measures for at least four months. Ingram Micro Services is also offering severance payment, which will go beyond the legal requirements according to the company.
The job cuts are reported to be due to a restructuring of the business division which is responsible for the repair of mobile devices. The new business strategy includes different services like leasing and recycling which will be tailor-made to the needs of the specialist trade partners and industry customers. According to the management, the company is hoping to re-hire some of the affected employees at a later stage again.
Ingram Micro has 9 sites in Germany and is operating within 39 countries.
