Blokker, a Dutch chain of retail stores has announced the closures of several of its Blokker stores. The reorganisation is an attempt to improve the profitability of the chain, modernise the remaining stores. The company is faced with increasing competition from online retailers and an outdated business model. Several of the less profitable stores are up for sale. In total 302 employees will lose their jobs, mainly shop clerks and support personnel. The activities will be concentrated in the distribution center in Geldermalsen.
The chain is implementing large-scale restructuring in the Netherlands as well where 1600 employees are facing dismissal. Other subsidiaries of the Blokker group are being sold in the Netherlands as well (including toy stores Bart Smit and Intertoys and furniture store Leen Bakker). It is still unclear what will happen to their affiliates in Belgium.
