Aberystwyth University has announced plans to cut 150 jobs as it seeks to make cost reductions of GBP 11 million (€12.75 million). The university has cited Brexit, competition to attract students and rising costs as reasons for the decision. The university has stated that no departments will be closed as a result of the decision and that it hopes to avoid the need for compulsory redundancies. It has reopened its schemes for voluntary redundancy and for early retirement. There is no information about the types of staff or grades who are potentially affected. A spokesperson for the Unison trade union noted that there had been a drop in student application numbers but attributed this to poor decisions by senior management. The trade union also commented that due to the importance of the university to the local economy, the job losses would have a significant impact.
