Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
High Street chemist Boots has announced that it plans to close around two-thirds of its in-store photo processing labs putting 400 jobs at risk. According to a company statement, the decision to close 220 of the 320 labs is a response to changing customer demand and competition from online services. A consultation has already started with affected employees and it is being reported that this is expected to conclude by the summer. Boots has confirmed that it intends to look at options for redeployment of staff, but it expects that redundancies will be necessary.
