Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The retail chain Auchan has announced a modernisation plan of its shops, resulting in the creation of 318 positions in 2017. The group will invest EUR 1.3 billion in its 126 "hypermarkets" and "supermarkets" including 256 shops under the brand SimplyMarket. 60% of the investments aims to modernise the shops and 10% will be focused on digitalisation. The chain will also create a shared services centre in Villeneuve-d’Ascq to centralise support functions. But the job losses that will occur will be compensated by the job creation resulting from the modernisation plan so that the management announced a job net creation of 318 positions within the Auchan group. According to the data provided to the central works council, the centralisation of support function will lead to 462 job cuts while 780 positions will be created in the framework of the modernisation. In total, the plan will lead to 318 job net creations. The union CFDT disagrees with the data and expect 869 job cuts and 475 job creation with a total of job net losses of 394. More clarification are expected at the next central works council on 22 March 2017. The goup employs 73,000 people but face a slightly decline of its turnover (-2.7% in 2015).
