Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 27 January 2017, German manufacturer of printing machines Manroland Web Systems announced its plan to outsource 280 positions by June 2017. The new subsidiary will be responsible for the mechanical and sheet metal production, surface technology and switch cabinet construction.
The company has been struggling over the last years and in 2011 filed for insolvency. Manroland split into Manroland Web Systems and Manroland sheetfed and was bought by the British Langley Holding.
Already in 2014, Manroland cut 225 jobs due to the bad economic situation (Manroland, 2014). The German Metalworkers’ Union announced protest due to worries about a possible sale of the outsourced company.
The company reached a turnover of €242 million in 2016 and a profit before interest and tax of €6,5 million. Manroland currently employs around 1,100 people.
