Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Thanks to the acquisition by VDL Groep of Componenta, a Finnish metal casting company producing parts for trucks and heavy machinery that went bankrupt in September 2016, 150 former employees will be employed again at the foundries VDL Castings Weert and VDL Castings Heerlen. 336 employees and 120 temporary agency workers had lost their jobs due to the bankruptcy, but VDL Groep expects that, as orders pick up, they will be able to hire a substantial number of the former employees.
VDL Groep is a family-owned business conglomerate engaged in the development and production of the manufacturing of finished and semi-finished products, buses and coaches. It has production facilities in several European countries and sales offices worldwide. It has recently contributed to significant job growth at their car manufacturing plant VDL Nedcar in Born, in the same region as VDL Castings Weert and VDL Castings Heerlen.
