Description

The Austrian Armed Forces (Österreichisches Bundesheer) is to increase the number of staff by at least 3,800 by2020. Recently, the Austrian Bundesheer has been facing a cut down of 9% in staff between 2009 and 2014, according to a report from the Austrian Court of Auditors shows.

The responsible Federal Ministry for National Defence and Sport (BMLVS) argues that new challenges caused by terrorism and migration made investments necessary. Until 2020 the ministry plans to hire 3,800 career soldiers, both male and female (Berufssoldat und -soldatinnen). Additionally, 1,200 to 1,400 people will be required to make up for retirements. The Bundeheer has also emphasised efforts to make military services more attractive for women, as currently only 3% of staff are female. Complementary, €1.7 billion will be invested in infrastructure and equipment.
