Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
General Electric has announced that it is to close its operations in Kidsgrove, Staffordshire with the loss of 232 jobs. The site which manufactures components involved in the production of electricity is due for final closure in March 2017. Workers will start to leave in October 2016, with actual production scheduled to cease in December 2016. The Unite trade union has criticised the decision and has demanded further explanation as to why the site will be closed. The union has said that it suspects that General Electric wishes to transfer production to sites in Germany, though the company has rejected this suggestion.
