Description

Italian cement producer Cementir announced 106 dismissals at the sites in Taranto (47), Arquata Scrivia (Alessandria) (25), Spoleto (Perugia) (21), Maddaloni (Caserta) (10), Civitavecchia (2) and Rome (1). Some 96 job losses will affect blue-collar workers and the remainder will target managers.

The company attributed the dismissals to declining sales and loss of market share over recent years. Furthermore, the management does not expect any increase in productivity in the sector until 2020. Reportedly, these negative trends do not allow maintaining the current employment levels.

At the Taranto site, dismissals will start at the end of the solidarity contracts, which is to occur in 18 October 2016.

Unions accused the management of being uncooperative and inconsistent as the group has recently acquired a competitor, reported a profit of €800 million and was awarded two important public bids. Several protest actions are to be discussed in the forthcoming days.

On 23 September a meeting was held at the premises of the Ministry of Labour, but no agreement was reached between union representatives and the management. Further negotiations have been postponed to 18th October.
