Description

Romanian state-owned power producer Hunedoara Energy Complex (CEH) announced a restructuring and reorganisation plan affecting 840 jobs. The job cuts will start to be implemented as of 1 October 2016. According to trade unions,  452 employees will be made redundant at the coal-based power plant in Mintia, another 100 at the plant in Paroşeni and finally 228 at the mines in the Jiu Valley.

CEH had been in insolvency proceedings from January until May 2016 , but the Alba Iulia Appeal Court ordered a refile at Hunedoara Court. CEH has debts of over 333 mil EURO, of which 300 mil EURO are to the state.

In April 2016, the Board of Directors prepared a redundancy plan which was approved by the General Meeting of Shareholders and sent to the Ministry of Energy. According to the plan, 840 jobs were declared redundant as of 1 October 2016. This plan was challenged by the trade union representatives at the County Labour Inspectorate earlier this month.

In the meantime the Ministry of Energy prepared a draft for a Government Decision which aims to reduce CEH’s activity, to balance the budget and to improve the financial indicators of the company.

The redundant employees will receive only unemployment benefits and monthly incomes. The trade union asserted that the collective agreement was denounced as illegal by the insolvency administrator last March. Unionists said that they hope to negotiate a new collective agreement which includes compensatory payments for collective redundancies.

CEH has some 6,260 employees working in the coal mines Lupeni, Lonea, Livezeni and Vulcan, as well as in the coal-based power plants Mintia and Paroseni.
