Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
BAM Galère, a Belgian construction company, part of the Dutch BAM group and based in Chaudfontaine has announced the dismissal of 111 employees. The main reasons behind the restructuring has been the general negative economic climate in the construction sector, ongoing competition with cheaper foreign construction workers and the recent loss of several important projects. The 111 employees facing dismissal are blue collar construction workers. It is still unclear if all will be direct dismissals or whether there will be other types of job reduction measures and what the timing will be. Trade unions state that they will try to reduce the number of direct dismissals to an absolute minimum. First negotiations between unions and the employer did not lead to an outcome that would change the prospects of the 111 employees with regards to the loss of their job.
