Description

On March 2016, tobacco producer Bulgartabac Holding announced that it will let go 416 employees of a total of 420 staff employed in cigarette making factory Sofia-BT as of 1 April 2016. The management explained that the holding is to close the factory because of the significant decline in orders and a recent negative media campaign.

Redundant employees have received proposals from Bulgartabac Holding for compensation. The average amount to be paid is of 15,000 BGN (EUR 7,679) but some sums will exceed this amount by far and be of 35 000 BGN (EUR 17,919). The Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB) and the Confederation of Labour Podkrepa (CL Podkrepa) are seeking a solution to protect the redundant workers. According to the unionists no objective economic analyses and evidence in support of the need of cutting the jobs were presented at the talks.

Sofia–BT was established in 1909 by bringing together several small cigarette enterprises in Sofia under the name of Cigarette Factory – Sofia. In 1993 the factory became part of the Bulgartabac Holdingwas. Since 2004, the company has had a perpetual license for the production of tobacco products and tobacco processing.
