Description

London based, ready meal producer Bakkavor has announced plans to cut 310 jobs. Of the jobs affected, 280 are currently filled by agency staff and 30 are employees. The move comes after a contract to supply mashed potato to supermarket chain Tesco was discontinued. It is reported that the company hopes to redeploy around two-thirds of the affected staff to shifts making hummus, where sales are strong. A spokesperson for the GMB union also noted that part of the package of changes was the intention to reduce the working week from 40 hours to 38, resulting in pay reductions for workers. The job cuts are subject to the statutory 45 day consultation period and it is not known when the cuts will be implemented.
