Description
On 14 January 2016, the construction company Colas has announced it will close its refinery in Dunkerque and a social plan will be negotiated in order to cut 111 positions. According to management, the refinery is faced with a loss of €30 million. However, on 4 February, management and employees' representatives have started to negotiate an employment safeguard plan and the management has stated it will try to find a company to take over the plant in the next three months. Colas bought the refinery in 2010 and employed 265 workers then. In October 2014, Colas had already cut 150 jobs on the site. According to sources, the chances of finding a company willing to takeover the plant are small, and the site will probably be closed in the next six months. In the framework of the employment safeguard plan, the group Colas (35,000 employees) will negotiate on internal mobility. Unions have warned they will launch demonstrations and strikes to save the employees' positions.
