Description
Bookmaker Betfred is set to close its call centre in Wigan, Greater Manchester with the loss of 112 jobs. It is understood that the jobs will be cut sometime before Christmas. Of the 112 jobs, 14 are full time and the remaining 98 are part time; the majority of the positions are held by women. The decision to close the call centre is not without controversy. The Unite union claim that Betfred are failing to honour their obligations in respect of the redundancy packages. The workers were originally employed by government-owned bookmaker Tote which was bought by Betfred in 2011. Part of that buyout, the union argues, included the transfer of terms and conditions of employment, including the right to enhanced redundancy payments. According to the Unite official this means that some workers will suffer a detriment of thousands of pounds.
