Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
BAE Systems has announced plans to cut 371 jobs at sites in Lancashire as it reduces production of the Typhoon fighter jet. 343 job losses will take place at the Samlesbury site, comprising 237 production line workers, 97 professional or administrative staff and 9 managers. 28 production line jobs will be cut from the Warton site. A spokesperson for BAE commented that they would seek to redeploy staff where possible would seek to avoid compulsory redundancies. A spokesperson for the Unite union urged the government to intervene to protect the skills and capacity to build the Typhoon fighter, though there has been no response. It is not known when the job losses will take effect.
