Description

Due to Russia's embargo on Latvian fish produce, Liepaja fish cannery Kolumbija has decided to halt production. On 9 June 2015, Kolumbija, one of the largest fish processing companies in Latvia, announced that 225 out of 300 employees would be laid off as a result of Russia's embargo on Latvian fish produce. The company plans to retain a small number of workers to carry out specific orders. On 18 June 2015, the company informed media, that thanks to the Government's assistance to fish producers (tax holidays, credit guaranties and other assistance) only 50 workers had been laid off. Fifty workers continued working at the plant and the remaining 200 were on one month paid leave.
