US Bristow Group has announced the loss of 130 jobs in its Scottish-based Bristow Helicopters. Among those who have been made redundant are 66 pilots located in Aberdeen and Scattsta in Shetland. Prior to the announcement, the company employed 1,950 staff across the United Kingdom. Based in Aberdeen, the company has said that after taking other measures to reduce costs, it was necessary to make 130 jobs redundant. A downturn in the North Sea oil and gas industry has been cited as the reason for the reduction in Bristow’s workforce. Formal consultation has commenced with the British Airline Pilots’ Association (BALPA), with the union calling upon the UK and Scottish governments to convene an urgent summit on North Sea jobs to help retain skills as a result of the downturn in world price for oil.
